I’ve lived in Britain for ten years but I still don’t know (for example) the different implications of saying “Maggie” or “Margaret” before “Thatcher.” I’ve lived in the Czech Republic and Mexico and Turkey and England, but I don’t understand them the way I understand Indiana. MG: Why write a novel centered on the Midwest?īK: It’s what I know. Some people call it a story collection and some call it a novel. I set out to write some short stories, but as I wrote Snapper certain things began drawing the stories together. MG: Did you always plan on writing a novel?īK: Not really. Midwester Gothic: First things first, tell us about your Midwestern roots.īrian Kimberling: I grew up in Evansville, Indiana, and went to Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. He now lives in England with his wife and son. Subsequently he taught English in the Czech Republic, Mexico, and Turkey. As a student he was involved in a major study of songbirds, an experience central to his first novel, Snapper, which won the inaugural Janklow & Nesbit Bath Spa Prize. Brian Kimberling grew up in Evansville, Indiana, and graduated from Indiana University.
